| VI. [Husum, Fall {1902] And beyond Husum, the sun was sinking Black dunes stood out in purple light Like blue slate the quiet sea lay there -- Around me all the roofs were gleaming Like red copper -- and the walls Seemed alight as if in dark-red flames. And rosy floods were streaming on the plain Who, wide and flat, with great humility Offered itself to the sun's last kiss Each single leaf, each single blade made red In happiness profound, a dreaming everywhere Light dreams, as in an awakening... And deeper glowed the light ambers Glowing dark-red and purple-violet -- I stood by the window, spellbound and still, And gazed at this enchanted land And thought, if only I had you here! Great longing welled up through my blood. Then black veils came rolling in, They covered this beloved earth: I thought, I thought of only you Who seem so strange and wondrous to me, Who came to me, disturbed my inner piece And made my blood so heavy with desire. To you I wished to show all of this splendour My deep elation should resound in you IIn your heart; and your strong hand Should hold my hand as if akin; I hardly knew you, yet I followed blindly My strong desire and waking dreams dreamt in the night. |
