FPG's Letters to A. L. Phelps

Dear Phelps,

I did not know the book was out. I haven't seen it. But chance would have it that I still could get a copy of the F.P. to read that review. No, it does not touch me - Please, if you have a copy to spare - of the review - I mean, send it for Mrs. Grove's file. The reviewer has not read the book or does not understand the psychology of chastity, that is all. However, that does not prevent that I am sorry. I had hoped the Free Press would help. I do need the pennies.

I'm glad that Allison was impressed. Still, the Tribune does not counterbalance the Free Press.

I'm feeling my way towards a modus vivendi with Harper's - owing to what you said. Shall let you know if anything materializes.

All well, including Captain.

Yours,
F.P.G.

PS - What makes me feel a little bad about that F.P. review is its lameness. Nobody knows the little weak points in that book as I do. But I did not expect a benevolent easy "letting down" - a quarrel about it would rather help than hinder. But, you know, the ending is weak, the way it stands. As it used to be, it was the gathering up of some small fragments of two shattered lives.
