FPG's Letters to A. L. Phelps

Rapid City, Man.    September 28, 1926

Dear A.L.,

I've been laid up with lumbago for nearly 3 weeks, rather racked with pain.

However, Henning writes to me urging to send a novel ("the best you've got") to a certain N.Y. agent. Which one (which novel ) do you advise?

W.A.D. advises me to offer one to the Western Home Journal. Now, last spring I offered to offer them sketches & short stories. They did not even answer my letter. What do you think? "Eat humble pie" and write to them again?

The Tribune has accepted a series of articles (silly stuff) on camping. But they lowered the price down to ¼ of their usual rate. I had rather hoped that, if they wanted them at all, they'd be willing to pay me a premium over their usual rates, considering that they get my name. But this is not the way it works out. They offered me $20 for 8000 words and said, take it or leave it. I sell since May needs a wintercoat, I took it.

The rest of us are well. We've not quite got over marveling at the trip we had.

When are you people going to drop in on us? I hope to be up again next week.

Ann well? Mrs. Phelps? Your own self?

Yours,
F.P.G.
