FPG's Letters to A. L. Phelps

Dear A.L.P. & R.,

I had another shock night before last. So yesterday we led Dr. Edmison from Brandon up for a consultation. They are going to ship me to the hospital to-morrow morning, by express - on a stretcher. I believe it is merely a move for the move's sake. It will have an effect on my pocket-book, that's about all - at least unless when I get back, I am that much worse.

As for you, R, I have shipped the books back. Robin S[?] seems to have given me 2 new ideas - otherwise he is too much idolatrous of progress (sit nemia verbis) to suit me. Hudson is adorable in his way, a most amiable book, to me. Couperus - quite a literary tour de force, somewhat recherché. Have you more of such things? If so, address to Mrs. G. who'll see that I get them.

As for you, A.L., I enjoyed typhoon very much, more perhaps than anything else I've read of Conrad's. Ellis's New Spirit almost made me jump: it is muddle-headed. He has picked up no essential thread, neither in France nor Russia nor Norway . It is deplorable , that's what it is. It is almost damnable. It makes me wish to straighten out some of the kinks in his back - or at least to rewrite the whole thing - but where take the time? Yet, I'd do it if I had a stenographer. "Modern Criticism" I've not read yet, except same common sense about the drama by Galsworthy.

By the way, when are you coming to R.C.?

Yours,
F.P.G.
