Dear A.L.P.,
Just a few words. I'm terribly flustered, all the time,
about the next Tribune thing. It keeps me from doing anything
else.
Well, re "L" - it's good , decidedly. So why not more of
that sort of thing? God knows we need it.
If you know how much it takes for me to say good you wont
think that a poor compliment.
Re Miller, I haven no idea when he's going to print. Since
Dec 1 st he has promised proofs "next week". "right after
the New Year" - "Very shortly." It's the same old story.
A spring book after Mar 31, in my opinion, is going to be
still-born. But I'm not saying a word to him, of course.
Doran had promised Settlers for August and brought it end
of October. There was, of course, no Christmas sale worth
mentioning.
Yes, Marshall wrote, as you Summarize.
Miller is "keen" - well, he's investing money, if he is.He's
boosted all his books by private correspondence. I hear every
now and then of his "now" saying, "Grove's Search the best
on my list" - as last summer he said "Macbeth's Shackles,
the best ever". And Deacon believes it.
Have read Mrs. Williams' book which she sent me. Wish you'd
send me draft of a letter to send her. Very honest work.
Landscapes seen and carefully transcribed; but not brought
to life as mirrors of emotion. Philosophy of error in migration
rather shallow. Happenings rather casual. Characters not
sufficiently incubated. I can't write her that, can I? Hate
to give her mere conventionalities. I'm worried.
My back, by the way, hurts.
Say "Hello" for me to Ann. Remember me to Mrs. P.
We'll move in spring. But where to?
Yours,
F.P.G.
