FPG's Letters to A. L. Phelps

Dear A.L.P.,

Now you know you are talking rot. I'd agree to take Kirk's contribution only because the book was thus linked. You also know that, already, as an appreciator of literature (sit verria verbo), you are overshadowing Canada. And don't say it isn't so. I know. As a teaching influence (again sit verria verbo) you are, right now, overshadowed by one single other person in this country: W.J. Alexander, who has the start on you by 40 yrs. I listen around; and many voices enter my slightly deaf ears. Don't file too much: send her along!!! I'm here to print the stuff.

Yes, my back is better: I'm driving in and out of town 4 times every day: no risk. The furniture will be welcome whenever it comes. As a reader? Damn it. Write . I can't afford a steady reader just now; but whenever I do, I'll make you an offer. I'm a pretty good reader myself. Eayrs said the other day to someone I know, "Grove's the man with the soundest judgment in Canada," and he meant it. That's why I'm after your copy. Nobody needed as much prodding as you. Now go to it.

P.
