in Man Ray's witty pun on America, 1921***

Man Ray's letter is to Tristan Tzara in Paris, & states that
"dada cannot live in New York ..."
His pun uses a still-frame of FrL in the nude as letter "A"
"MERDELAMERDELAMERDELAMERDELAMER
de la "A" merique"
It plays on "mer" / "sea" and "merde" / "shit"
The image of FrL's pose as capital "A" is taken from a lost film by Man Ray + Marcel Duchamp, entitled "The Baroness shaving her pubic hair" (1921)
