[363]: "Die Ubersetzung dieses Buches / besorgte Felix Paul Greve. / Der / Druck erfolgte in der Spamer-/ schen Buchdruckerei zu Leipzig." -- Bound in orig. light-brown linen, with gold monogram "HdeB" on cover, & spine-title "Balzac / Ein Junggesel / lenheim." -- Title proper & Half-Titles in green capitals by Eric Gill.-- Note: Translation of La Rabouilleuse as Ein Junggesellenheim (p.7-361) is by Felix Paul Greve. Early "Auflage" of Bd.. 1, Insel publisher's Balzac ed. in 16 vols., 1908-1911. -- The UM Libraries also own a copy of this book on 5 microfiches, filmed for D. O. Spettigue's Collection by the Stauffer Library, Queen's University. Local Note: Donated by Dr. Irene Gammel in 1990. Note: Referenced in Sarkowski 69, and Wilpert/Gühring 36 (for Hofmannsthal's Introd.). This is the first volume of the Insel-Verlag's monumental Balzac ed. in 16 v., 1908-1911. Though it includes Hugo von Hofmannsthal's 1909 "Einleitung", it is, most likely intentionally, dated back on the title-page to "MCMVIII" / 1908. A ZVAB entry describes the "Erste Ausgabe" of this volume with the following words: "... Titel & Einband von Eric Gill. Titelbild [probably, of Rodin's Balzac bust] ; XLVI, 361 (3) S. ; 18.5x12 cm." -- Some sets have different bindings, like the one of 100 numbered copies bound in green leather offered by antiqurians Müller & Gräff, Stuttgart: "Einband u. Titel von E. Gill. Grüne Orig.-Maroqinlederbände mit Rückenvergoldung & Kopfgoldschnitt ...." -- Bd. 1 & 2 are furthermore part of a 200 copy "Vorzugsausgabe auf Büttenpapier." [Source: WorldCat] In the 10 v. ed. of 1923-1925, the "Junggesellenheim" was been demoted to Bd. 3 & contains two other titles [Das Antiquitätenkabinett, and Die Lilie im Tal]. -- Insel director Anton Kippenberg complained to Else von Freytag-Loringhoven shortly after Greve's alleged "suicide" in mid-1909, that he had turned his Balzac translations upside down from one printing to the next.
