Local Note:
Translated by Felix Paul Greve, later Frederick Philip Grove, for Bruns publishers, Minden. --

Re-issued in 1907 as Bd. 7 of "Gustave Flauberts Gesammelte Werke, "erste deutsche, von den Rechtsnachfolgern Flauberts autorisierte Gesamt-Ausgabe, herausgegeben von Dr. E. W. Fischer." --
There, the t.p. reverses the order of "E. Greve's" & F. P. Greve's respective tasks, i.e., FPG has "selected, introduced, and annotated" the text, which "E. Greve" has translated. -- The list of correspondents is omitted.

The Preface by Greve explains the princples of his selection from the orig. 4 v. ed. in the "Bibliotheque-Charpentier:" "Aesthetics and Biography" have been favoured; Mme Bovary is not mentioned, but there is a reference to Flaubert's travel notes from the Orient in a second volume of Letters [namely, Reiseblätter,, Oct. 1905].--
Greve's Pref. is signed "September 1904, F. P. Greve" --

The alleged translator "E. Greve" is, of course, Else Ploetz, divorced Endell, who became later known as the New York Dada artist Baroness von Freytag-Loringhoven. --
She had been Greve's lover since late 1902, and wasn't married to him before mid-1907. -- In September 1904, Else & Greve were already living in voluntary exile in Wollerau, Switzeland.

A page of advertisement in the back lists Greve's transl. of St. Antoine and Luise Wolf's of L'Education sentimentale. --

Acquired from D. O. Spettigue, Summer, 1994. --
