Annotation:
Gide's La porte etroite was first published serially in Le Mercure de France in 1909. It must have been translated simultaneously as one of Felix Paul Greve's last translation assignments, since he disappeared from Berlin with a faked suicide in late July 1909.

Summary:
"The title [of Gide's La porte etroite] comes from Matthew 7:13-14: "Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." Set in the Protestant upper-middle-class world of Normandy in the 1880s and reflecting Gide's own relationship with his cousin Madeleine, Jerome loves his cousin Alissa, but fails to find happiness."
