  • Author: Grove, Frederick Philip, 1879-1948.
Title: Settlers of the marsh / by Frederick Philip Grove. -
Published: Toronto : The Ryerson Press, [c1925].
    Description: 341 p. ; 20 cm.
Local Note: The H. G. Wade copy held in RBR was part of a Else von Freytag-Loringhoven exhibition at the Literaturhaus Berlin, 23. April -8. May 2005. -- This is Grove's first Canadian novel, & though set in the Riding Mountain area west of Lake Manitoba & near the town of Waldersee (Odense in the book), it is actually an account of Greve's year with his wife Else (later Baroness von Freytag-Loringhoven) on a small farm near Sparta, Kentucky. We know from her papers at the University of Maryland, College Park, that he left her there in 1911. -- Real-life Sparta/Cincinnati becomes Waldersee/Winnipeg in the 1925 book, the virtuous protagonist Niels stands for hard-working FPG (Grove/Grove) himself, while Else is depicted as the depraved "older woman" Clara Vogel who tricks Niels into marriage. -- In Grove's 1927 autobiographical book "A Search for America", the geographically & chronologically CENTRAL Sparta episode is understandably lacking. Of the otherwise poorly documented 3 years Greve spent in the United States, only two-thirds of his adventures in New York & in North Dakota are covered in fair detail. The time frame is from late July 1909, when Greve/Phil Branden crossed the Atlantic on a White Star Liner [the "Megantic"] from Liverpool to Montreal, to September 1912, when he came [as Grove] to Manitoba, though set allegedly in 1892 (ISM, 1946, [181].

The "Author's Note" [p. vii] is identical to the original first 1927 ed. by Graphic and the other two 1928 H. Miller/Graphic eds: it is dated "December, 1926", states "Rapid City, Man.", and is signed with the plain initials "F.P.G", a habit Grove already practiced as Greve. Grove claims here that this book has been rewritten 8 times over the last 32 years, becoming ever shorter, and that any "anachronisms" are "an unavoidable consequence of such a method of composition" to be excused for this reason. He thanks A.L.P. [Phelps] and W.K. [Kirkconnell] of Wesley College, Winnipeg, for their encouragement.--

Grove, indignant, published his paper along with other essays three years later in "this austerely idealistic volume" (W. Kirkconnell, A Sclice of Canada, 1967, 293, quoted in Pacey, Letters of FPG, 1976, p. 150, n.4). --

Local Note: This RBR book was part of a Else von Freytag-Loringhoven exhibition at the Literaturhaus Berlin, 23. April -8. May 2005. --
Notes: Unlike the Louis Carrier ed. of 1928, on which it is clearly based, the 1939 Ryerson ed. has Meekison's drawn map of eastern & central North America as front & back, not only back, lining papers. RBR copy of the Oct. 1928 Carrier ed. has Grove's autograph to A. L. Gordon on the otherwise plain inside covers. --
This unique 1939 RBR copy has "ACCESSION NUMBER" stamped over the lower left corner of the inside cover lining map, & underneath, "175359" in pencil; at the top is written "E. Dafoe Mem Fund / 4.08". --

Verso of tp: Lists copyrights as 1927, by FPG, 1928 by L. Carrier & Co., & 1939 by The Ryerson Press, Toronto. A long note about "reserved rights" appears instead of the acknowledgement of Meekison's map design, & the printing note. --

    Each Book is introduced with a motto: p. [1], a quotation from Robert Louis Stevenson; p. [105] & [317], Henry David Thoreau; p. [223], Thomas Carlyle. --
The lining papers by Meekison, representing a rough map of eastern and western North America, are repeated on the inside back cover.
Annotation: Autobiographical fiction affording numerous glimpses into Grove's life as Felix Paul Greve (1879-1909), and the three poorly documented years he spent in America before coming to Manitoba in late 1912. --
The 1928 subtitle of the L. Carrier ed., "The Odyssey of an Immigrant," is omitted. --
The "Author's Note to the Fourth Edition" [p. vii] is roughly three times as long as the December 1926 note found in all previous editions by Graphic Publishers (1., Oct. 1927; 2., January 1928 Carillon Club ed., and 3.,"1st reprinting" in June 1928), and also in the so-called "American ed." by Louis Carrier (Oct. 1928). --
In the original "Author's Note" Grove had claimed that this book had been rewritten 8 times over 32 years, and that "anachronisms", as "an unavoidable consequence of such a method of composition," had to be excused for this very reason. He had thanked A.L.P. [Phelps] and W.K. [Kirkconnell] of Wesley College, Winnipeg, for their encouragement.

He has since been in ill health which in 1944 resulted in a paralytic stroke. / As for his literary work, after 1938 he was preoccupied by what he considered a panoramic novel of Canada, entitled 'The Seasons'. Since he is now disabled, there is small hope of his ever completing that novel. There are, however, three or four completed books and between sixty and a hundred short stories, read for the first time in 1945 by anyone outside his family; though a few of them have appeared in quarterlies and daily papers. / He cannot close this note without mentioning that since 1944, the time of his stroke, he has been in receipt of a pension from the Canadian Writers' Foundation. Apart from that, since 1940 he has acted as reader and adviser for The Macmillan Company of Canada Limited."
Annotation: This is FPG (Greve/Grove)'s "official" autobiography, in which he recants the dangerously accurate information he so candidly volunteered in his first autobiographical novel 'A Search for America' 19 years earlier (1927), clues which led straight to the discovery of the Bonanza Farm "in the Dakotas" in 1996, FPG's long illusive passage to America in 1998, & the NY Book scam in 2000. -- The cover monogram, of which Grove stated in his correspondence that it was designed by an old friend a long time ago, is by August Endell, with whose wife Else he eloped in Jnauary 1903. -- In the 3-paragraph "Author's Postscript" to this 1946 book 'In Search of Myself', Grove points out that it covers his life up to 1939; that in 1938, he had to give up farming on doctors' orders; that since 1938, he has been working on "a panoramic novel of Canada" entitled "The Seasons" [note: this unpublished manuscript exists in the Frederick Philip Grove Collection, Mss 2, Box 15, fd. 1-7]; that he has "three or four completed books" and "between 60 and 100 short stories" ready for publication; that in 1944, he suffered a "paralytic stroke;" and finally, that, since 1944, he has been the recipient of a pension granted by the Canadian Writers' Foundation.
