  • 332. Shaw, Bernard, 1856-1950.  Androcles and the Lion.  Overruled.  Pygmalion. London : Constable & Co., 1916.
    cxviii, 205 p. ; 18 cm.
NOTES: Signed in pencil: "F. P. Grove". -- Nine titles by Shaw in Grove's Library suggest a heightened interest in this author. However, none show signs of Grove's reading, and Else von Freytag-Loringhoven's statement that Greve disliked Shaw before 1912, and disapproved of her liking him, may also later be applied to Grove. She also says that FPG almost met Shaw in person during a 1904 visit to H. G. Wells. It is possible that Greve made up for this missed opportunity during one of his subsequent trips to England before 1909.

NOTES: Signed in ink: "F. P. Grove."--Given that the eight other editions of Shaw's works in Grove's possession are publications by Constable & Co, in London, England, this Louis Carrier title is intriguing. The same Montreal publisher handled Grove's only known translation, Gustav Amann's Legacy of Sun Yatsen in 1928/1929, Maurois' Disraeli [no. 248] and this book, both published in 1928 as well. Note that the Shaw specialist Chesterton [no. 70] who  introduced Grove's editions of Matthew Arnold [no. 8] and Dickens [no. 91-92], is not mentioned in any of Grove's Shaw volumes.

    SERIES: Everyman's library. Fiction ; no. 915
NOTES: Greve translated The Time Machine as Die Zeitmaschine for Bruns Publishers in 1904, as well as five other works. He had met the author in England in 1904, and possibly on other occasions before his disappearance in 1909. Autographed copies of all six of Greve's translations are extant in the H. G. Wells Collection at the University of Urbana-Champaign. -- Grove often makes rather disparaging remarks about Wells; he certainly considered his philosphical views inferior to Spengler's, and he appears to have resented the authors success.

  • 423. Wilde, Oscar, 1854-1900.  The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Ballad of Reading Gaol, and Other Works of Oscar Wilde.  With an introduction by Hesketh Pearson.  London : J. M. Dent &  Sons Ltd., 1930.
    xix, 428 p. ; 17 cm.
NOTES: The presence of this volume in Grove's Library is of great impotance: as Greve, he had translated numerous of Wilde's works for Bruns Publishers, including all of the titles in this book, between 1902 and 1904. He also wrote three lengthy critical articles about him. He imitated Wilde's dandyism, and embraced his decadent conception of the"art/life" dichotomy. After he served a prison term for fraud in 1903/4, Greve reversed the poles, and gave "life" priority over "art" (reported by Gide, "Conversation avec un Allemand," 1919, from notes taken in 1904). FPG's post-1904 aesthetics and lifestyle reflect his choice of a new model, namely, Flaubert.
